Western Idaho Fair.

Oh I do love me some Western Idaho Fair. What can I say? When I was growing up it was the one activity my mother would pull me out of school for. You see she liked to go during the day, smaller crowds, she could spend more time comparing her clothes to the competition, trying to determine why she did not win a blue ribbon in every category.

Things I go to do at the fair included:

1. Spending endless amount of time in the home arts sections, looking and picking apart the clothing.
2. Going through the commercial booth section and getting free balloon, generally from the water softener companies
3. Going on ONE carnival ride of my choice.
4. Getting one fair food item of my choice.
5. Going through the RV's on display.

Things I did not get to do at the fair included:

1. Looking at any livestock or small farm animal, reason, they smell, and they are messy, and what is the point. Hello?!!! She grew up on a chicken/egg farm!
2. Hanging out at the beer garden.
3. Going on more than ONE carnival ride.
4. Getting my face painted.
5. Wondering off from my mother after I had my fill of the home arts section, which was about 15 minutes max for me, two hours minimum for her.

That being said, my children needed to experience the fair. We have been to the Utah State fair, but I am sorry its just NOT the same. So last weekend I had to head to Boise for several events, and it just so happened that the Western Idaho Fair was going on., hence making recreating my childhood convenient.

And well when it comes to the fair, the more the merrier! The Tanners went with us to the fair, along with Colin and Ciarran. We were a formidable group.

We arrived just in time for dinner. One the menu, a pronto puff, i.e. a corn dog. (While waiting in line for a pronto puff, I noticed a booth selling fried Twinkies, and determined THAT would be dessert.) Good news, as you can see from the picture, a corn dog can be consumed on the run, or at least while sitting in a stroller.

Next it was on to the rides. Mark of course, found himself a train.

The ferris wheel was a great choice! Here are the boys, and...

here are the girls, minus Katie. I didn't trust her NOT to leap out.....

Although Mark found himself a train, he really like the slide.

He rode it I don't know how many times......

Now unlike my mother, I allowed my children to view livestock and small farm animals. I guess I was not jaded from being raised on a chicken/egg farm.

We liked this rooster, it reminded me of that chicken/egg farm.

See I told you Colin and Ciarran joined us! Actually it was a good thing. Anything that increased the adult to child ratio is a GOOD thing!

We even got our picture with the King of Pop.

Alas as the evening drew on, and I wanted to complete my experience with a yummy treat that can only be enjoyed at the fair. The fried Twinkie. As we rode rides, looked at livestock, looked at the home art exhibits, went through the commercial booths, my mouth salivated with the thought of this delicious fried, highly caloric treat. While I was waiting to order my treat I also noticed they offered fried Oreos. Hey I am at the fair, why not? So I ordered both. The Twinkie was served on a stick, and the Oreos were bite size bits.

I patiently waited for my delicious treats. Once I scored them I had to find a proper place to sit to consume my delicacies and savor every greasy morsel. As I bit into the Twinkie I noted that it was sadly lacking in flavor and tasted like a bunch of fried goo. The sponge cake and filling were not even recognizable. It was not the yummy treat I had anticipated.
Now the Oreos on the other had.....oooo I could eat those all day. They were heavenly!

The last activity of the night, a carousel ride for Katie.
We like the Western Idaho Fair, especially when NOT forced to spend two hours in the home arts department!

That looks like so much fun! I will definitely have to seek me out some fried oreos. Sounds very tasty.

Awe yes, I too have fond childhood memories of the Western Idaho Fair. We did not go this year... and I kinda felt like I was missing out.

My brother-in-law just recently introduced us to deep-fried OREOs. He made them for us, while he and his family visited a few weeks ago. I think I liked them... better try a few more to find out for sure. :)

Another brother-in-law swears that a deep-fried SNICKERS is heaven on earth. Haven't tried that one yet.

I haven't ever been to the Idaho fair, but it sounds like you had a good time. When I was growing up in Salt Lake, we had Fair Day and we actually got one afternoon off from school to go to the Utah State Fair.

There is a restaurant in Spokane that serves deep fried Oreos and Jolee has to have them every time she comes to town. She'll have to tell you exactly what they are served with, but I think it's either ice cream (or whipping cream) and lots of hot fudge. A real artery clogger, but dipped in beer batter they must be healthy...or not!
