Butterflies.

One of the gift the kids got for Christmas was a butterfly garden. However because it was December it was a gift that had to wait for summer and warmer weather. Recently Rick sent away for the caterpillars and helped get them going upon arrival.

They formed chrysalides

The kids loved watching them hatch. I thought it was a bit disgusting. They had this red fluid that got everywhere during that hatching process.
Finally they all hatched. We are keeping them in the butterfly garden for a few days and anticipate setting them free this weekend.

More summer fun.

On Monday night I decided to let the kids choose what to do for Family Home Evening. On the top of their list, a trip to Toys r Us to ogle toys. (I did specifically tell them I would NOT be purchasing anything, and I stuck to that!) We spent about an hour, and let me tell you after an hour of three children simultaneously wanted me to see their "favorite" toys, and being upset and demanding when I was paying attention to another child, I felt as if my head was going to explode. Now I am good a multi-tasking, but this outing pushed me to the limit of my sanity.
Katie fancies herself a race car driver. She would have really liked for me to bring this home. I don't quite think the neighborhood is ready for Katie on wheels. I am not ready for Kaite on wheels.
After Toy r Us, it was on to Sonic for yummy ice cream Sundays.
We were all quite the sticky mess after.....
I skipped the ice cream Sunday, after the Toys r Us experience I needed 44 oz of a cold diet coke...Yes!

After a brief break....

Last week was CRAZY. Hence my brief break from blogging. It started out on Tuesday with one secretary on vacation, and 43 cases to be scheduled for following week. Which normally is not a big deal, that is unless the copy machine is broken for two days. It threw off my entire weekly schedule.

Next it was DANCE. On Tuesday night the girls had company showcase, which was the last dance performance of the year, and after helping the girls through six costume changes and trying to entertain Mark who would basically rather do anything than have to suffer through a dance performance, it left me feeling as if I had just completed an Iron Man competition.

Oh, but dance was not over on Tuesday, it continued on to Wednesday. Wednesday began two days of summer intensive, which is where the girls are at the dance studio for the good part of the day, learning their dances for company try outs. Summer intensive consumed us on Wednesday and Thursday. Laure then had try outs for ballroom dance late Thursday afternoon, with Katie having jazz tryouts Friday morning, and Lauren having Jazz and Hip Hop try outs Friday afternoon.

We concluded the week Saturday with an end of the year pool party with all our dance friends.

Did I mention that Lauren also had an activity for Activity Days that required me to drive her up to Hobble Creek canyon on Wednesday late afternoon?

In spite of the craziness, we decided to ring in summer by breaking out the kiddie pool. Mark and Katie thought it was just grand. So from Wednesday to Friday every chance they could get they stripped off their play clothes and put on their swim suits.

They were in and out of this pool ALL day long. (And we have the sunburn to prove it)
On Friday we went across the street to a real pool.
Yes it was a crazy week, but it was a good week!

The drums....

First it was the air guitar in the grocery store, while singing "my butt is on fire."

Now it is the drums with chopsticks and stools.

And of course singing at the top of her lungs.

At least drums with chopsticks on the stools is a LOT quieter than the real drums.

S'mores

What's a better summer time treat than a S'more?

Our trick to making them is using our gas stove top.
Quick, easy, and fun.

But the real fun is eating them.

Cookies

A few weeks ago Lauren came home from school and reported that several girls in her class are allowed to make cookies by themselves. Lauren informed me that she wanted to make cookies by herself. I figured, why not?

She is carefully measuring ingredients.

Including the flour.

Once it reached the dough stage, it was on to cookie formation, under Katie's watchful supervision.

Katie was seriously trying to swipe cookie dough, don't understand where she gets that from???

Cookies turned out great, and I declared Lauren to be the new official cookie maker in our house.

Revenge

Oh the joys of having a little sister....just ask Lauren.

On Wednesday night I put Katie to bed at the regular time of 9:00 p.m. Lauren's bedtime is 10:00 p.m. Katie was not tired and decided a little time in Lauren's room would elevate her boredom. While in Lauren's room she discovered that Lauren had swiped a box that Kallie gave to Kaite. Katie in an act of revenge, took Lauren's iPad, her silly bands, her designer Barbies and all the accompanying clothes and accessories, and her American Girl doll along with all its accessories. All of Lauren's swiped possessions were taken to Katie's room and place on Katie's bed.

Katie was busted playing on the iPad.

My kingdom was invaded

My kingdom is the treadmill. I went to the basement to get on the treadmill on Friday night, only to discover my kingdom had been invaded.

The Playmobile people invaded, with a little help from Katie, of course.

As you can see it was a full invasion.

I loved how Katie positioned the people and engaged them in conversation.

I only wish I could see into her mind as she did this. Alas I had to reclaim my kingdom. Hopefully next time the Playmobile people decide to invade they will chose a different location.

Friday night.

Its Friday night, what is a party of four to do? Get out of the house!

Our first stop, to meet Vincent D'Onofirio. He stars in Law and Order Criminal Intent, a show I really like. He was in town because first of all his sister lives in Utah, and owns a great restaurant, and second to promote his charity, Utah Meth Cops Project. Although the kids did not know who he was because Law and Order is a bit mature for them, it was a good chance to explain his charity to the kids and make a donation.
Second stop, Wallaby's. Its a favorite of ours. Pulled pork, and the best "smashers" you have ever eaten. It was enough for two meals, which means, no cooking for me on Saturday night! Woo Hoo!

Oh, and their BBQ sauce.....ummmm... just thinking about it makes my mouth all watery.

Mark and Katie don't enjoy the more refined pallet that Lauren and I have, so they stuck to mac and cheese. It must be good too, because they ate every last noodle.

Final stop Walmart. I promised the kids new Crayons for the summer and while there, the bikes of course needed to be test driven.

Now you know how we roll on a Friday night.

Kaite's big adventure.....

As many of you know, especially if you have spent any time around Katie, she missed the memo that she is FOUR years old, and firmly believes she is 24 years old and can do as she pleases. The problem with this belief is that she is FOUR years old and lacks the slightly improved maturity of a 24 year old.

Yesterday was a Thursday so she spent the day at Grandma Linda's house. I picked the kids up around 5 p.m., and was discussing with Linda some pictures I had that she wanted to see. I told her I would return later with the pictures. We went home, I fed the kids dinner, and then cleaned up the kitchen. By then it was around 7:15 p.m. Mark was in the basement playing with his trains, Katie was in the front living room playing in a fort she made and Lauren was on the computer. I told Lauren I was running up to Grandma Linda's house and would return in 20 minutes.

I ran, (or rather drove in my car) spent my 20 minutes and returned home. When I returned home things were just as I had left them. I could hear kids in the basement, which I presumed to be Mark and Katie, and Lauren was on the computer. I continued cleaning the house for another 20 minutes.

I was headed toward the garage to put away a tool when my back door opened and in walked Katie with her pink scooter and my neighbor Kelli. I must have had a really confused look on my face because I thought Katie was in the basement. With her arrival through the back door I realized she was not in the basement and had probably been riding her scooter around the neighborhood ALONE. I asked Kelli if she had been riding around the neighborhood. (Its a 'no no' to ride alone, at FOUR you must be accompanied by Lauren)

Kelli proceeded to tell me that Katie was found with her scooter headed up the hill to Grandma Linda's house. What this means is that not only was scooting around the neighborhood alone, she crossed an extremely busy street, where I nearly got ran over about a week prior because its hilly, and you can't see cars coming, and if they are driving super fast you can't hear them until its too late.

After she crossed the street she was headed up the hill, scooter in tow. An older couple noticed her and realized she was out of place. They stopped to determine where she belonged. She told them her mom was at Grandma's and she was headed to Grandma's. Of course she could not articulate where she lived or where Grandma lived, and with her lisp they couldn't understand her first name only her last name "Vincent."

Kelli was coming home from work around the same time and noticed the couple with Katie. They were far enough away she didn't recognize Katie. The husband, who saw Kelli pulling into our neighborhood, followed her to inquire if she knew the owner of the blond girl with the pink scooter. Kelli knew that all blonde hair, blue eyed children belonged to me, so she said "I think she might belong to my neighbor, let me see her and I will know." One look at Katie she knew I was the owner.

Kelli agreed to bring her back to me and assumed I was in a panic looking for her. Katie said "good bye" to the nice couple, who by the way gave her CANDY, so she thought was all sorts of fun.

My mind raced as Kelli told me the story. I kept thinking of all the things that could have happened to her that didn't and wondered how I missed Katie when I drove the route home that she took heading up the hill.

I thanked Kelli for bringing my child back to me, and noticed her work badge indicating she was an RN in the newborn NICU, which of course explains her kindness. After she left, Katie and I had a "serious" talk about leaving the house. I explained that she could ride her scooter alone in the back yard, but she could not ride in the neighborhood or up to Grandma's without mommy or Lauren. We talked about the busy street and I asked her what would have happened if she got hit by a car. She said she could have a big "owie." I told her she could have died and then she would be living with Heavenly Father and not me. She got very sober at that point, and remained that way for the rest of the evening.

I wish I knew who the couple was that saw Katie, knew she was out of place and stopped. I want to thank them. They were very kind. And had they not stopped who knows how far Katie would have gotten, or because the street she was on didn't have sidewalks she easily could have been hit trying to travel up the hill.

I am so grateful for my wonderful neighbor who was coming home from work just at the right time.

And as strange as this sounds I am grateful that I didn't know she was gone, although I was about 30 seconds from discovering she was gone, because I was about to call the kids for their evening treat. If I had figured out she was not in the house and not in my yard I think I might have been hyperventilating in a paper sack. Lauren would have had to call 911 on ME then report Katie missing. It never would have occurred to me that Katie would leave the neighborhood and head to Grandma's.

Most of all I am thankful that Katie was watched over and protected. I am quite sure that Grandma bear Hertha was looking out for her. It's good to have grandparents in high places.

The Bangles

Summer's new hot trend? The bangle bracelet. All three of us have a set in our size. We are a fashion force to be reckoned with. Oddly enough Mark didn't want a set in his size.....I can't imagine why.......

Summer Vacation

Its summer vacation. This is how we roll.
